John Paz has over 15 years of experience as a technical communicator and content designer – a career that has taken him around the world and back. He is passionate about sharing his story and helping aspiring tech professionals enter the industry.

John Paz graduated from UCF in 2008 with a B.A. in English and a focus in Technical Writing. He has over 15 years of experience working in the tech industry as a Technical Writing and Content Designer. He worked extensively as a short-term contractor in Orlando for some of the more reputable simulation and training defense contractors in the area for nearly a decade. In 2015 John accepted an offer from an Australian tech company to relocate him and his entire family to Sydney. Then, the Aussie Pazzies relocated again, to San Francisco, and once more back to Orlando, where he resides today. Technical Writing has taken him around the world, and he wants to share his story and help aspiring tech professionals with practical advice to help land more interviews and secure a lucrative job working in tech. John is also passionate about diversifying tech and regularly gives talks about how underrepresented folks can break into tech, and how working in technology can help break generational cycles of poverty.

Hi everyone,

Welcome back and happy Spring 2022! I hope your first week back has been great and that it was a refreshing long weekend. It was fun seeing everyone who came to our first Spring general body meeting. As we discussed, this semester is going to be quite the active one for our club. We’re excited to have you all be part of it.

As a reminder, for the remainder of Spring FTC will be having meetings every week on Fridays at 6:00 PM. We’re making extra room for a several guest speaker appearances and more to come.

Additionally, at our meeting we revealed three ways you can get involved in FTC over the coming months. These include visiting Otronicon with us, taking a group trip to the STC Summit, and looking into joining FTC leadership. Please fill out our interest survey if you are interested in or want to learn more about any of these programs and opportunities.

Welcome Back! — Spring 2022 Update

Welcome back and happy first day of Spring classes, everyone! 🎊

We have our first general body meeting of Spring this Friday at 6:00pm. We’ll have some general discussion, talk about upcoming club events, and play some games afterward too if there’s time. Click here to find the Zoom call link on our KnightConnect page.

Second update: our meetings are now going to be every week on Fridays from 6:00 – 7:00pm. We have lots of programs and guest speakers we are excited to bring to you this semester! As before, our meetings will primarily be hosted online.

Welcome to our first round of FTC community spotlight articles! This time, we are spotlighting our two Publications Committee members: Zachary Miller and Danielle Porres.

Introducing FTC Publications

The Future Technical Communicators club was established in 2000 as the product of two technical communication students at UCF with a dream. They both sought to make a student organization that offered itself as a place for technical communication students to sharpen the skills they would need when they enter a career in technical communication. Beyond that, the club sought to help its members find and get a job in those very careers. Since then, it has grown to offer an array of programs from workshops to guest speaker events and networking opportunities, all while still pursuing that same goal. Whether you are a freshman or senior, graduate or undergraduate student, technical communication major or otherwise, FTC always seeks to provide you with opportunities to gain something practical that can’t be gained in the classroom alone. We want you to give you a push that makes you not just an excellent student but a prepared professional.

We want to add one more asset to our repertoire of resources for members. Our club’s current website was established fairly recently, back at the end of Fall 2020. While it has information about the club itself and houses some of our content, it never had a definitive purpose. The officers have wanted to make the website a proper home for FTC content, and in doing so, we had the idea of giving it something unique too — something you could only find here and something that was useful for students at the same time. One idea led to another, and then we got to work.

Hey everyone,

It’s the end of the semester already! All that’s left is finals week, and then it’s time for winter break. We at FTC hope you do great on all your exams and projects then get to enjoy a restful holiday season.

Additionally, we’d like to say congratulations to all our graduating members! You’re seen, you’re appreciated, and you should be proud of the accomplishments you’ve made to reach the finish line. Remember that even if you’ve graduated, you’ll always have a place with FTC.

This month’s newsletter will go over some club updates and news to round out the year. Last month we had two general body meetings, one on using WordPress and the other to discuss the past semester and the one ahead, and we have recaps of both for you. Beyond that, we have an update on the mentoring program for all who applied earlier in the semester. We also would like to remind you that our FTC T-Shirt Design Contest is closing tomorrow, December 3rd; there’s still time to apply by sharing your drawing or idea for a chance to win multiple prizes and to take part in some fun. Finally, next weekend we have a Dungeons & Dragons session planned, which is sure to be a great time as we segue into the break. Aside from that, look out for any miscellaneous updates from the club before school is finally out.

Hey everyone,

Happy November! It’s beginning to get cooler, daylight savings just passed by giving us all an extra hour of sleep, and there’s just one month left to go until the end of the semester. There’s lots of change all around and just as much to be excited for.

Speaking of things to be excited for, the club has been up to a lot lately, and there are an array of upcoming meetings, programs, and opportunities for you to look forward to. We have two general body meetings planned this month, and our FTC T-Shirt Design Contest is open for submissions until November 22. Anyone is encouraged to submit their idea for a design that could be featured on our club shirts in the future.
